Anthony Barnett MA is a lecturer in Video Production and Performing Arts at The College Of West Anglia.
Previously he was an actor at the National Theatre in productions directed by amongst others Michael Blakemore and John Dexter. He has performed many leading roles in repertory and on commercial tours including Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing and Milo Tindle in Sleuth.
His TV and film roles however were always few and far between. In the search for reasons why, Anthony worked with Patrick Tucker and discovered his "Secrets Of Screen Acting" (Routledge ISBN-10:0878300422). He now has the answer which he is keen to share through his workshops. He now knows why he will never again hear from a technician the humiliating sentence "very good for a stage performance"!
Had he had the benefit of one of his own workshops: the parts in Commercials, TV and Film that he did do would have reaped better rewards. Do not let yourself make the same mistakes.

Acting on Camera
Why do so many of our great theatre actors come over as 'hammy' on Screen? Is it really enough to just think in character for screen acting?
The workshops I run have surprisingly unconventional solutions to these questions and a plethora of exciting techniques based largely on Patrick Tucker's superb analysis of the art in his book Secrets of Screen Acting and my own experience as an actor, director and teacher.
In the profession, newcomers find themselves in front of the camera with unqualified 'hearsay' of what should or should not be done to deliver a sensational screen debut.
One thing they can be sure of, 99% of the time, the director will be too occupied, or unable, to guide the inexperienced artist to the peak of their performance should it not be materialising as casting requires. Don't let yourself or students graduate to a possibly embarrassing first and probably last engagement.
Workshops
Will give your students a head start into the profession with a scope of techniques for all occasions.
They will have the confidence and knowledge of what works for them on camera, and how best to bring their characters to life in the frame; i.e. close up, medium shot and long shot.
They will discover the revelation of the importance of sound levels. Essentially, they will be able to make fools of themselves on camera without the pressure of a million pound budget stifling their creativity, but when they hopefully are in that situation they will know what works and deliver it on cue and in time.
Audition Techniques for screen tests will give them the edge. When attending on camera auditions your graduates will be giving themselves the best chance to win the parts with the knowledge and experience gleaned.
For maximum success give your students the opportunity to participate in these workshops regularly throughout their training.
Anthony Barnett directs the To Be Or Not To Be Screen Acting workshops using professional studio equipment, consisting of camera, monitor, boom operated sound, lighting and when required an autocue for presenter workshops.
What happens if you want an acting showreel, video film or music video from To Be Or Not To Be?
The following explains the steps you will go through when commissioning video film from To Be Or Not To Be. The process will be broadly similar with other production companies, though details will differ with each company.
"Action"
Shot One - Initial Contacts Initial consultations, submitting suggestions ("treatment" "acting showreel scripts etc.,) and a quote of the cost of making the video - To Be Or Not To Be makes no charge for this.
Shot Two - The Script Once the treatment has been agreed, we ask for a written order commissioning the script. This is normally written by us in close consultation with the client and is based on information supplied by him/her. The completed script will normally be accompanied by a budget showing the total cost of producing the film, based on that script.
Once written and approved, the script must be paid for even if, for any reason, the client decides not to go ahead with the film. Sometimes clients wish to write their own script but as this is specialised work, we advise that it be done in close collaboration with us and always prior to any filming. In all cases, if significant changes to the script are required by the client after the budget has been agreed and which involve extra work such as filming, extra editing and/or re-editing, such work will be charged at cost over and above the original budget.
Shot Three - Filming and Post Production On acceptance of the script and budget by the client, we will submit an invoice for 1/3 of the agreed budget and when this payment is received, filming and post production can proceed.
Shot Four - Completion When completed, the film will be submitted for approval. At this stage, any amendments required by the client will be made. Once the film has been approved, the balance of production costs become due.
As soon as this payment has been received, copies may be ordered as required. These will be an additional cost for any over and above your master copy that is included in your quote.
Shot Five - Copies can be made in any format. The norm is PAL for U.K., most of Europe and ex. British colonies, China and much of Africa. NTSC for America and Japan and SECAM for France, parts of Eastern Europe and Russia. We will need to know where the DVD is to be shown before making copies. Unless otherwise specified most work will be delivered on DVD's for the best quality.
